HEALTH PROGRAMS FOR THE SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY
Our Ys are committed to offering programs that are specifically targeted to help those with chronic diseases and health challenges, to help alleviate symptoms, prevent onset and to aid in recovery. From obesity and heart disease to LIVESTRONG at the YMCA for cancer survivors and Parkinson’s, the Y is here to better the health of our entire community.
YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program
This one-year program is designed to help adults adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes.
Currently, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people. Pre-diabetes affects an estimated 79 million people, one in three adults, in the United States, but only 11 percent of those individuals know they have it. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in adults over age 60.
The program is open to all qualifying community participants. Enrollment is currently taking place for our upcoming sessions (morning and evening classes are available). For more information or to see if you qualify, please contact Katrina Mancebo, RD, LDN at 978-524-8991 x1152 or email@example.com

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. This program fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their "new normal". The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is about health, not disease.
Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life.
In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff and members. YMCA fitness instructors work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive cancer care.

Healthy Weight & Your Child
"The Healthy Weight and Your Child program offers a family based weight management program which includes teaching lifestyle changes along with incorporating regular exercise within the local YMCA setting. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to take advantage of within their community." - Sharon Weston MS RD LDN, Clinical Nutrition Specialist, Boston Children's Hospital
Healthy Weight and Your Child is a pilot program designed to empower children between the ages of 7-13, with support from their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity now affects 17 percent of all children and adolescents in the United States—triple the rate from just one generation ago. Today, one in six children are obese and one in three are overweight. These children are at greater risk for a number of health problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and mental health issues.
The 25-session program engages the whole family, so together they can understand how the home environment and other factors influence the choices that lead to a healthy weight. The program focuses on three elements—healthy eating, regular physical activity and behavior change. Made up of groups of eight to 15 children and their parents/caregivers, the program creates a welcoming, safe, fun and active environment for children and their families to explore and adopt proven methods for living a healthier lifestyle.
Sessions are two hours in length, with the first hour delivered in a classroom setting and the second hour focused on physical activity. Children eligible for the program must be between the ages of 7 and 13, have a body mass index (BMI)greater than or equal to the 95th percentile, receive approval from their doctor or a health care provider and be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at every session.
